Our Modderfontein Montessori Primary School opened in January 2013 after numerous parents expressed an interest in continuing their children’s Montessori education. It has proven to be a positive addition to our school and something we are proud to offer.
The Montessori Primary School is split into two groups:
- Junior Primary is for children between the ages of six and nine years
- Senior Primary is for children between the ages of nine and twelve years
The Primary School continues learning through the use of Montessori materials, following the SAMA adopted AMI curriculum. Classes aim to stimulate intellectual abilities, self-discipline, confidence and a positive attitude towards learning, ensuring that your children grow into well-rounded individuals.
Cosmic Education Curriculum
The Montessori Primary (Elementary) school curriculum is firmly rooted in what is known as Cosmic Education. Cosmic education is based on the 5 Great Lessons. These are impressionistic stories that are intended to provide Montessori primary students with a big picture of what the world is and what life is. Children start to become aware of the world and what their place in it is. The great lessons for a child are more than just education and inspiration, they spark the imagination and direct students to contemplate the past and the future. The telling and re-telling of these stories is important to motivate the students into further research and different pieces of work in the Montessori classroom and the world at large.
Children are entering the second plane of development and they start to develop a sense of justice as they become aware of the natural world and its laws. Through these lessons they move to explore topics within history, geography, mathematics, science and language.
Montessori Primary school students start to develop admiration and gratitude for those that came before us to pave the way for what we have today.
Maria Montessori’s five great lessons that direct the Primary school curriculum are:
1. The Beginning of the Universe and Earth
2. Life Comes to Earth
3. Humans Come to Earth
4. How Writing Began
5. How Numbers Began
Each of these great lessons diverts into different areas of learning, that allow the child individual exploration based on their natural interest. Children will relate to the stories in many different ways, and the Primary curriculum allows for the child to explore further into the part that has interested them the most.
Primary School Operating Hours
Modderfontein Montessori Primary School is open from 07:00 to 14:00, with aftercare facilities operating from 14:00 until 17:30. Parents are requested to provide their children with a healthy mid-morning snack from home, lunch if they are enrolled for aftercare, as well as water or juice to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
Holiday care is also available over the school holidays. This option is available at an additional cost for all parents who do not have that support over the school holidays.
Primary School Uniform
Our Primary School children have a smart-casual school uniform that they wear daily. The uniform introduces a sense of “growing up” for the children, as they take on the more serious appeal of the next level in their education.
Intra-curricular activities are the activities that form part of your standard school fees and are offered as part of the curriculum at no additional cost.
A 60-minute lesson is offered once a week. On the day of your child’s PE lesson they should bring a white t-shirt, blue shorts and takkies to change into. Our PE programme looks at the development of core muscles, the knowledge of different sports as well as the muscles and skills required for each sport.
The Primary School children have a weekly music lesson. This lesson includes the introduction and development of musical theory. They learn the recorder as well as how to read music.
Afrikaans is the second language that is taught as part of the curriculum. Zulu is an optional second language that is available for the children. Lessons are held once a week.
Give your child the advantage of the next level of Montessori education offered by Modderfontein Montessori Primary School.
